McCain may be (have been) a good man but he ran a campaign that appealed only to complete ideological die-hards. That stubborn group included party loyalists, single issue voters, the uncompassionate wealthy (look in the mirror) and both unapologetic as well as unconcious bigots. Will the Democrats (as a party) screw up this mandate? They will do their worst, but We did an amazing thing yesterday in electing a leader who is much more than a Democrat, and is larger than life and iconic because of his depth of character. There is no “empty suit” here; there is a leader with the intelligence, demeanor and depths of empathy to be worthy of the intense demands that will be placed on him.

6:30 am. Brought James with me and there are over 200 people in front of us. The line goes all the way down Adelphi and onto Lafayette; it looks like the marathon spectator crowds from Sunday (but only on one side of the street!)
